As Cade plodded along the others on the way back to the Shade Enclave, he had two and a half days to mule over the events in the cave. He mentally kicked himself for the thousandth time. I should have been more prepared! the wizard thought to himself. If Serechule saw how ill-prepared I was, he would be sorely disappointed, thought the wizard. However, he knew he would have to see his master about the matter. Not being able to see an invisible enemy could have easily killed us all! That’s not even considering that the others mentioned an Undead being in our midst. Undead was not some thing Cade was particularly familiar with, and by the accounts of his companion, they were facing at least one of them. He would ask Serechule about dealing with those as well. I hate undead, the wizard continued to himself. Thinking over the spells he had at his disposal he made a childish face, half my spells won’t even affect most undead.
As the wizard slipped into a coughing fit, he pulled out a small vial. Lifting it to his lips, he poured the remaining contents into his mouth. I’ll need to get more of this. As nasty as it tastes, it helps too much to go without it. Finally, the city was within sight. I’ll have to talk to Serechule eventually, should probably get it over with..
As the young Shadovar entered the city, Zafar gave them specific tasks to do and a week to do it in. Cade had to acquire the necessary spells and scrolls needed to combat the Asabi and the undead. Not really caring what the others were tasked to do, Cade set off to do his job. Finding a merchant to sell a few scrolls of See Invisibility was not hard. Since Cade is familiar with many of the merchants in the city, he easily obtained the six scrolls he needed, one for himself and five for Zafar. Before it got too late, Cade needed to see his mentor, Serechule.
Cade approached the house of the man, not really wanting to have the conversation. However, he knew it was best to get it over with. As a servant answered the door, he was quickly shown to his master’s study since he was a well-known guest at the place. Bowing out of reverence, Cade began, “Hello, Master.” Cade related the story to his teacher, how his own pitfalls as a wizard caused the premature return to the city of Shade. Serechule came down hard on his student, telling him he was no better than a blast-happy sorcerer. However, Cade remained stoic, showing no sign of weakness at the verbal lashing. At least I will pass that part of this taunting, the wizard thought. After being thoroughly tongue lashed, Cade asked about different ways to combat the undead. He knew enough about them to know that he could not hope to defeat them with his current spell repertoire. Serechule suggested a few spells, a couple Cade had come across before, and one he hadn’t. Serechule said he would have the scrolls prepared by this time tomorrow, and Cade was to come back then.
Cade returned to his apartment. It was a sparsely decorated place. It has a small kitchen that occupied the same space as the sitting area. To the left was a door which leads to the bedroom. In the bedroom was a small bookshelf that was half full of books and rolled up parchments of notes as well as a desk with several vials of ink, six or seven different stacks of parchments, and a average size bed. The walls were also lined with a pair of shelves, one above the other. On the shelves was all manor of things, including cheap spell components, more books, and a variety of items Cade had collected from different places and times as a student. There was also a chamber pot in the far corner of the room. Entering his room, Cade laid down his travel pack and took off his robe, which was in need of cleaning. I’m surprised Serechule did not say any thing about my disheveled appearance. He sat at his desk and looked down. Staring back at him was a treatise on the dangers of using a portal. He was quite familiar with it, since Serechule wrote it himself and it was covered in Cade’s own notes. Moving it to the side, Cade reached down into his pack and pulled out one of his new scrolls. Just as he laid it flat on the table, his stomach began to grumble and Cade realized he hadn’t eaten for quite awhile. He got up and went to the other room of his two room apartment. In this area was another desk filled with even more stacks of paper and two shelves, completely full of books and parchments that Cade had read or was reading. Also, there was a small table with several chairs, a couch and a couple of nicer chairs. The kitchen was relatively barren, a few cabinets with some foodstuffs, as well as utensils for cooking. Cade decided he would have some thing small and head to bed, since he had nothing but rations for the past week. He whipped up a bowl of tomato-based soup with cheese. After a satisfying meal, he changed his clothes and was rewarded with a good nights sleep. As his head hit the pillow, the Shadovar wizard thought Tomorrow I’ll begin righting a treatise on the Asabi and their combat tactics, and he was fast asleep.

A Treatise on Asabi Warfare.
After extensive time studying, researching, and battling laerti, now known throughout the desert of Anauroch as asabi, a name give to them by the nomadic tribes dwelling in the desert. Many of these creatures live in and around the desert in small communities or villages and in caves.
Asabi are lizard-like humanoids. The asabi have to distinct subraces. The taller, stronger breed is a stingtail. They are larger than a normal citizen of Shade, some thing reminiscent of a werecrocodile. The smaller subrace is a more common asabi. These shorter versions stand about level with the average Shadovar citizen; however, they look like larger versions of kobolds.
This larger breed of Asabi is more warrior-like and bestial in battle. While on guard, they carefully stand at attention, but once provoked into battle, a more ferocious warrior you would be hard pressed to find. With a screech akin to bird squawk, they wade into melee combat with abandon. They use natural attacks such as bite, and ones that dwell in cave networks are more prone to the use of greataxes, than other weapons. They are fierce combatants to be sure; however, they are very prone to fall victim to magical spells and effects. Magicks that affect the mind were most effective.
The smaller, more kobold like asabi are easily dismissed in combat when standing next to their larger cousins. However, only the foolish would attempt such a thing. Though small they maybe, they are generally well prepared for combat. Still, martial prowess is not there defining ability; it is their use of spells. While they do not have the spell capacity of the trained wizards of Shadovar, they do have an impressive arsenal for being so barbaric. Their spells include Invisibility and a few selective offensive spells. They, like their bigger cousins, are also prone to falling to the powerful magic the city of Shade brings forth.
Most of the time you will encounter one or two the smaller asabi with a gang (any where from three to five) of stingtails. The asabi are also slow to react, giving Shadovar citizens plenty of time to react first. There combat tactics are just as barbaric as their fighting styles. The usually group up and attack a singular target, which makes casting area effecting spells more powerful. You also want to bait the stingtails into attacking a Shadovar that one, does not mind taking hits, and two can actually take hits. As for dealing with their sorcerers (an obvious insight, since I found no spellbooks of any sort among their belongings), they need to be take out quickly and effectively. Otherwise, they will either make themselves invisible.
Essential items when fighting Asabi: See Invisibility – when you just cannot deal with them fast enough A strong fighter – some one needs to draw the fire of the stingtails Mind affecting spells – the lizardmen are weak minded; therefore, enchantment and illusion spells go along way Area damaging spells – to rid yourself of several asabi and stingtails at once
