I had an idea for a variant rule for critical hits. as you know, a critical hit is when a blow strikes a vital spot on a targets body. and also, rolling for damage determines where the weapon strikes. so I had the idea that what if rather then rolling a high number for attack, rolling a high damage roll resulted in a critical. like for instance, rolling d8 for longsword, it only has 8 possible results for damage. with this variant rule, one in 8 hits is a critical (a result of 8). the reason for this is that if theres a varied possibility of damage, which represents where the blow hits, then the highest possible roll would, naturally, be a critical. so the character rolls an 8, which has x2 damage, so 16. the character has +2 strength (15), so it does 18 damage. one 'problem' with this, is that a dagger would have 1 in 4 chances of getting a critical. of course, a critical with a dagger fails to compare with a critical from a long, or even shortm sword. also, a greatsword has 2d6 damage. so both would have to be 6's for it to be a critical. the explanation for this is that its hard to get a critical with a very heavy sword that you lack control with. however, you're probably wondering what happens to feats such as improved critical. these, rather then doubling threat range, decrease the number required to get a critical by one, making the longsword hit a critical on a roll of 7 or 8. any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

It looks fine at first, but you have to look a little deeper. A rapier threatens on 3 numbers. Improved critical (rapier) threatens on 6 numbers. A rapier deals 1d6 damege. This also hurts the great-sword, but who uses that anyway? A great-axe is so much more powerful.

A smart person uses a great sword because if you look at it the max damage w/out crit is the same but because your rolling two D6 instead of 1 D12 you have a higher minimum damage.... can never only do 1 damage

yes but your greataxe gets a 1/12 chance to roll a 1 my greatsword gets a 0% chance of getting a 1 plus even if my dice and your both roll average mine more often will be higher, it's like choosing to use ot die instead of a D100 the ot die will give you a better average roll than the D100

Personally...I think the benifit (As well as the x3 critical multiplier) out weighs the risk of the greatsword doing one more damege on minimum rolls.

Regardless, I am usually pretty apprehensive about tweaking the crit hit rules. I played with a dm who had a 20 and 20 again , roll a hit confirmation = insta kill. It was fun 2-3 times when the players did it. The first time a goblin killed our barbarian, lol things became unpleasent.
